Dhyana: designing a connected wellness ring and app

What a real wellness product can teach us about designing the device, its software and the experience between them.

Dhyana brings a wearable ring and a companion meditation app into one wellness experience. It is part of Avantari’s product portfolio—not an illustration of an imaginary device. The photograph above shows the actual ring and app in use.

The product is more than the object

A connected wearable is experienced as a whole: the object on a person’s hand, the connection to their phone, the information on screen and the actions they can take next. A polished enclosure cannot compensate for a confusing app, and good software cannot compensate for uncomfortable hardware.

For a product-development team, those boundaries need attention early. Industrial design, electronics, firmware and the app should be developed together, with clear responsibilities and testing between them.

Make the experience understandable

People should know whether the device is connected, what a reading means and what to do when a connection is interrupted. A wellness product should explain the limits of its feedback just as clearly as its intended benefits.

Useful design reviews therefore consider practical situations: a first-time user, a low battery, a disconnected phone and information that must remain understandable on a small screen. Test those experiences on working hardware—not only in a design mock-up.

Wellness is not a medical claim

Dhyana is a wellness product. This article does not claim that it diagnoses a condition, measures stress hormones, treats anxiety or guarantees improvements in sleep or health. A medical claim needs appropriate evidence and review; it should not be added simply to make marketing copy sound stronger.

What to take into your next product

Start with the user’s task, define what the device and app must each do, and test their connection early. Keep product claims within what the evidence supports. This is relevant to many connected products, not just rings or wellness wearables.
